Huperzine A and MemoMatrix: Which Versions List It and Why It Matters

Written by the MemoMatrix editorial team · Last updated · 7 min read · Medical review below

Quick answerHuperzine A is a club moss compound that blocks the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, the same target as the prescription drug donepezil. It is not on the full MemoMatrix label. It appears inside the 151 mg blend on a second panel and on the sales page list, with no amount printed. Memory research on it is limited and mixed.

Huperzine A is the one ingredient on the MemoMatrix lists that acts on the same target as a memory medicine. That is why it gets its own page here. If your bottle lists it, read the safety sections below before the first capsule.

Basics

What is huperzine A?

Huperzia serrata club moss

Huperzine A is a natural compound found in a club moss called Huperzia serrata. Today the compound is sold in many focus and memory supplements in the US.

Supplement makers usually do not grind up the whole plant and stop there. They use an extract set to a fixed share of huperzine A. The second panel calls its version a whole herb extract standardized to 1% huperzine-A.

The photo shows the club moss itself. It is an illustration of the plant, not of what is inside any capsule.

Mechanism

How does huperzine A act in the body?

Huperzine A slows down an enzyme. That enzyme, acetylcholinesterase, clears away acetylcholine, a messenger that nerve cells use. When the enzyme is blocked, acetylcholine lasts longer between nerve cells.

Donepezil works on the same enzyme (MedlinePlus, Donepezil). Doctors prescribe it for dementia in people with Alzheimer's disease. It does not cure the disease. Tap each step below to see the chain in order.

Labels

Which MemoMatrix ingredient lists name huperzine A?

Two of the three lists name it, and the full label does not. MemoMatrix is sold under one name with three different ingredient lists. Our formula comparison page lays out all three side by side.

The 151 mg blend on the second panel holds seven ingredients. The panel does not say how much of the blend is the club moss extract. So nobody reading that label can work out the huperzine A dose. A photo of that second panel sits on our Supplement Facts page.

Evidence

What does research say about huperzine A and memory?

The research is thin and the results do not agree. Memorial Sloan Kettering says huperzine A may help memory, but the studies are limited and mixed (MSKCC, Huperzia serrata).

A Cochrane review looked at huperzine A for Alzheimer's disease. It found there is currently not enough evidence to judge its effects (Cochrane, Huperzine A 2008). The NIH adds that no supplement has been shown to prevent dementia (NCCIH, Supplements for cognitive function).

Honest note: no study has tested MemoMatrix itself, in any of its versions. Because the second panel hides the amount, we cannot even compare its dose with the doses used in studies.

Huperzine A and donepezil: why the pair needs a doctor

Talk to the prescriber first

If you or a family member takes donepezil, rivastigmine or galantamine, do not add a MemoMatrix version that lists huperzine A without asking the prescriber. Two products that block the same enzyme can stack their side effects.

Memorial Sloan Kettering warns that huperzine A may raise the risk of side effects when it is taken with other drugs that block acetylcholinesterase (MSKCC, Huperzia serrata). Donepezil is the most familiar of these. The worry is a doubled effect on the same enzyme.

Families often buy memory supplements for a parent who already takes a memory medicine. That is the exact case where the version of the bottle matters most. Bring the bottle, not just the name, to the pharmacy counter.

Huperzine A can also interact with anticholinergic drugs. These work in the opposite direction on the same messenger system. Ask a pharmacist whether any of your medicines belong to that group.

Safety

What side effects are reported for huperzine A?

The reported side effects are mostly in the gut and the head. Here are the four named by Memorial Sloan Kettering. Stop and call your doctor if any of them is strong or does not settle.

Nausea

An upset stomach is one of the reported effects. Tell your doctor if it keeps coming back after each dose.

Feeling dizzy

Feeling light-headed matters more for older adults, since it can raise the risk of a fall.

Diarrhea

Loose stools are listed too. Bacopa, also on these lists, can upset the stomach as well.

Restless nights

Insomnia is reported. The second panel also has caffeine, which can add to it.

The second panel pairs huperzine A with caffeine from green coffee bean, theacrine and theobromine. Read our caffeine section if you are sensitive to stimulants. Our side effects page covers every ingredient on all three lists.

Who should wait

Who should ask a doctor before a huperzine A version?

Check with a doctor or pharmacist first if you are in any of these groups

  • Anyone taking donepezil, rivastigmine or galantamine
  • Anyone taking anticholinergic medicines, such as some bladder or allergy drugs (ask your pharmacist)
  • People with a known medical condition, as the full label itself advises
  • Anyone who is pregnant or nursing, and anyone under 18
  • People who get dizzy easily or have had a recent fall
  • Anyone sensitive to caffeine, since the same panel lists it

Memory loss that gets in the way of daily life needs a doctor's visit, not a supplement (NIA, Memory problems and aging). A checkup can turn up treatable problems, a shortage of B12 or a pill reaction for instance. The Alzheimer's Association lists signs to watch for (Alzheimer's Association, 10 warning signs).

Label check

How do you spot huperzine A on a label?

  1. 01

    Find the Supplement Facts box

It is on the side or back of the bottle. Ignore ad pages and photos for this step.

  2. 02

    Read the blend line slowly

Huperzine A often sits inside a proprietary blend. Look for huperzine-A, Huperzia serrata or club moss.

  3. 03

    Check the serving size

The full label says 2 capsules. The panel with huperzine A says 1 capsule. A different serving is a clue you have a different version.

  4. 04

Take a photo for your pharmacist

A clear picture of the panel lets them check it against your medicine list.

The same check works for ginkgo and lion’s mane, which appear only on the sales page list. Bacopa is on all three lists.

FAQ

Huperzine A in MemoMatrix: questions people search

Does MemoMatrix contain huperzine A?

It depends on your bottle. The full label (REV.11/25) does not list it, but a second Supplement Facts panel and the sales page do. Read the panel on your own bottle.

How much huperzine A is in MemoMatrix?

No amount is printed anywhere we could find. The second panel lists a Huperzia serrata extract inside a 151 mg blend, and the sales page lists huperzine A with no amount.

Can I take huperzine A with donepezil?

Ask the prescriber first. Huperzine A blocks the same enzyme as donepezil, and Memorial Sloan Kettering warns the combination may raise the risk of side effects.

What are the side effects of huperzine A?

Nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and trouble sleeping are the ones reported. It can also interact with anticholinergic drugs.

Is huperzine A safe for older adults?

There is not enough research to call it safe for long-term use. Someone with a crowded pill organizer should let a pharmacist screen it before day one.

Does huperzine A help with Alzheimer's disease?

A Cochrane review found there is currently not enough evidence to say. It is not a treatment for Alzheimer's or any dementia.

Where does huperzine A come from?

It comes from Huperzia serrata, a club moss. Supplements usually use an extract standardized to a set percentage of huperzine A.

How do I know if my bottle has huperzine A?

Look at the Supplement Facts panel for the words huperzine-A or Huperzia serrata, often inside a proprietary blend. If they are not there, your version does not list it.

Is huperzine A a drug or a supplement?

In the US it is sold as a dietary supplement ingredient. It acts on the same enzyme as some prescription memory medicines, which is why it calls for extra care.
